There are a number of ways that fungus can infect the human body. Whether on your skin, nails or scalp – fungus is not a topical problem. Fungal infections are systemic and although topical solutions can be effective as a nail fungus treatment, treating the problem systemically makes sense. Oral medications can be effective, but are difficult to metabolize and can create a strain on your liver. However, a wonderful alternative to medication is to adjust your diet. Although a change in diet normally requires a larger lifestyle change, it is important to attack the infection from all angles. And if you end up eating healthier and dropping a few pounds while you’re at it, then all the better! Here are a few tips on how to tinker with your diet and get rid of your fungal infection:
- Fungus can feed and live off of sugar alone. By cutting down on your sugar intake, you are denying the fungus a critical element for it’s survival. This includes limiting how much fruit you eat to one or two pieces a day. The same is also true for gluten. Gluten is a protein found in wheat. Bread, pasta, cereal and other high carbohydrate foods that include gluten can allow the fungus to flourish.
- Some food items that are known to have anti-fungal properties are garlic, onions and carrots. It is suggested that one should eat a clove of raw garlic and raw onion every day, which can significantly reduce your infection. All vegetables typically are good for your body and your immune system and can only help you in your fight against fungal infections. They are especially beneficial raw so juicing can increase the efficacy substantially. Additional foods with anti-fungal properties are ginger, oregano and grapefruit seed extract.
- It is commonly believed that cultures, or probiotics, have natural anti-fungal qualities. One terrific way to incorporate probitoics into your diet is to eat sugar-free yogurt. This will feed your digestive tract with natural bacteria that will help your body fight off the fungal infection. There are also probiotic supplements available on the market.
- Now that you have a game plan for combating your fungal infection from the inside, it is also wise to attack it from the outside. Topical treatments can help reduce the external fungus through direct contact. Look for a powerful jock-itch treatment, nail fungus treatment or ringworm treatment which are available over the counter to supplement your anti-fungal diet.
