One of the easiest steps a person can take to avoid developing a toenail fungus infection is to change socks regularly. Dermatophyes, the fungal agents that cause nail fungus, thrive in warm, damp environments which is exactly what socks create. This doesn’t mean that everyone needs to change their socks more than once a day, but for those whose perspire more regularly, it is a wise tactic to take in order to lower the risk of a toenail fungus infection.
It is suggested that if your feet get sweaty on a regular basis, you should use socks made from synthetic materials as opposed to cotton. Cotton socks hold perspiration and keep feet damp which is a high risk environment for nail fungus where synthetic materials allow the moisture to dissipate and will keep feet drier throughout the day. Fungus is a very resilient organism and can live in some very difficult environments. Providing a dark, damp atmosphere around your feet is an invitation to nail fungus agents.
