Nail fungus infections are complex and different which makes them difficult to eliminate. What works to cure toenail fungus in one case make be largely ineffective in another. Some infections seem to simply be more stubborn, especially if they are allowed to exist untreated for long periods of time. But since there are so many different treatment options, we’re going to review the three most popular home remedies.
1. Vinegar – Whether to use apple cider vinegar or distilled vinegar is up for debate. We’ve heard and read about both but it seems as though apple cider vinegar is the more popular choice. Soaking feet in a mixture of vinegar and water is supposed to adjust the pH of the skin and surrounding tissue which makes an environment inhospitable for fungal agents. The success rate appears to be around 50% but it’s a quick and cheap treatment so is often worth a try.
2. Vicks VapoRub – Personally, my father used Vicks for a mild toenail fungus infection and within 3 months, the infection was considerably better. Supposedly, the thyme oil has properties that inhibit the growth of dermatophytes, the fungal agents in nail fungus. However, we’re not fully convinced that using Vicks could battle anything other than a mild infections since there aren’t any proven anti-fungal elements in the ingredients.
3. Tea Tree Oil – A very popular home remedy, tea tree oil has been around for generations and serves many purposes. Organic chemicals called terpenoids have anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties that bond to the skin and surrounding tissues preventing fungal agent growth. However, tea tree oil can be found in many topical nail fungus treatments that also have additional anti-fungal elements that make them more effective.
The upshot of using home remedies is that they probably aren’t consistently the most effective treatments but are considerably cheaper and easier to get started with than over-the-counter products. If your infection is very mild, it may be worth giving one a try. But any stronger case will more than likely require a more powerful topical solution to cure toenail fungus completely.
